Why Resiliency?

Why Resiliency?

There are so many reasons to be stronger and more secure. It’s always a good idea, and always has been. But today, with serious environmental, political, and social uncertainty all around us it’s more important than ever.

If you’re here reading this my guess is you have some specific concerns about the near future related to security, happiness, and opportunity. For me, personally, the biggest issue is climate change. I see it as underlying all the other issues we face since, after all, nothing happens without a functioning biosphere.

I moved to Vermont specifically because it is one of the most climate resilient parts of the United States.

A few years back, I realized that nobody is coming to save us. That it is already too late to prevent the worst impacts of runaway climate change on Earth. It threw me into a black funk–one that I’m not out of yet (I wonder if I ever will be). I’ve been writing about it on my Substack (caution: big bummers).

One of the things that has helped me to feel less bad has been applying myself to building resiliency. I’ve been learning to grow food, purify water, forage, build, and more. I’ve been developing backup water, power, and food supplies. I’m getting my ham radio license. I’ve been building personal resiliency through things like meditation and therapy. I’ve also been taking more active measures, including starting Roots to Leaves.

I know I’m not the only one who is casting a wary eye on the near future. I want to connect with others in my region who are on the same wavelength so that we can share learnings, encourage one another, and multiply the power of our personal resiliency by turning it into community resiliency.

Together we are more resilient; together we are stronger. So join us!
